21st Century Maintenance Organization


One of the contributing factors to the Maintenance Crisis is that boomers are not just retiring but major thought leaders are departing to eternity. We lost several years ago the wisdom and energy of John Moubray author of numerous books on RCM and Maintenance Management strategies that revolutionized industry processes and practices. In honor of John, I am posting a column he gave me on the 21st Century Maintenance Organization. 10 years after original publication, I would love to hear from industry to validate whether this approach still applies or not.

There are only two types of RCM - Not Dozens!


The success of Reliability centered Maintenance has had good and bad connotations for professionals in the field of physical asset management. 

On one side you have scores of companies who have successfully implemented compliant RCM as an integral part of their maintenance development program.

On the other side you have many companies who have fallen for the lie that "any RCM is good", and that they can achieve a similar benefit / impact using non-compliant versions of the method.

Keep it simple


During the holiday period I spent a lot of time thinking about efficiency. We moved, myself and my family, from the Middle East to Australia where we now live in New South Wales. (Wonderful place, visit me sometime.)

In times like these it can be easy to try too hard, or reach too far. Reliability-centered maintenance, Weibull analysis, Crow Amsaa, etc., are all very valid excercises, and they all deliver phenomenal value - but before thinking about initiatives like these, are there other things you could be doing?
