Rotor balancing for bearing reliability

Consider the internal stresses such as vibration that can manifest in a rotor assembly.

The purpose of balancing a rotor is to reduce the vibration that can damage the bearings that support it. Even if a new rotor wasn’t balanced well in the manufacturer’s shop, it’s possible to balance it in the field after installation. However, balancing only alleviates bearing deterioration. The internal stress might still exist, especially in a multi-element rotor. Let’s find out why field balancing suppresses only the phenomenon — the vibration on the bearings — not the stress in the rotor.

Harassment at home

In this edition of In the Trenches, Acme wonders how to address harassment when it takes place during non-work hours.

During her 10 years at Acme, Becky Braveheart worked her way up from a receiving dock clerk to traffic manager of the company’s main facility. During a phone call with Harry Handsfree, the traffic manager at another Acme site, Becky, a lesbian, heard a man over the speaker phone in the background asking, “How’s that broad doing?” The man also made some explicit remarks about Becky’s lack of interest in the opposite gender, which prompted Harry to hang up the phone quickly.

Safety tips that work ... without lost time incidents

Two weeks ago, I wrote about Bremen Castings, a family-owned foundry and machine shop in Bremen, Indiana. It was on the cusp of hitting 500 days without lost-time injury. That milestone was met, so I thought some safety advice and insights from JB Brown, the company president, might be highly valuable. Here's what I found out, in Q&A format. Listen up, and take notes. He did not disappoint.

Laser shaft alignment innovation

This video from VibrAlign shows how to laser shaft align rotating shafts as quickly as possible with Fixturlaser's "True Position Sensing", available on the Fixturlaser XA and the Fixturlaser GO. Laser shaft alignment with Fixturlaser's dual laser, dual sensor design means the system tracks the shaft's true positions, allowing alignments to often be completed with just one set of measurements and adjustments.

Koyo’s Torrington Needle Roller Bearing product line to be integrated under the Koyo brand of Ball, Needle, & Roller Bearings

Starting on January 1, 2013, Koyo’s line of needle roller bearings will no longer be sold under the Koyo Torrington Needle Roller Bearing name. Rest assured, the only thing changing is the name on the box - you will continue to receive exactly the same quality product, made in the same factories, by the same people.
